FACE ON THE COVER: SIRKKU PELTOLA

Photo: Ari IjäsSirkku Peltola (b.1960) is one of Finland's most frequently performed playwrights and most distinguished directors. Her works have been popular both in Finland and abroad.

Her texts embrace contemporary social issues and describe the world through characters which possess crazy, caricature-like qualities that are nonetheless amply fleshed out. FIND OF THE WEEK: UNNECESSARY PEOPLE

Reko Lundán's Unnecessary People is a necessary story about supposedly unnecessary people.

The play illustrates one of our deepest contemporary tragedies -- unemployment -- and Lundán constructs the story unpretentiously. The events proceed with an Aristotelian inevitability towards their tragic, violent end. Lundán's text is harrowingly real and touching, but in spite of the bleak subject, he also finds humour in the everyday life, something that is impossible not to laugh at.

Unnecessary People has been translated into English and Estoanian, as well as twice into Swedish (in 2003 and 2008).
